Magnesium Therapy Could Ease Muscular Symptoms of Motor Neurone Disease

cognitive health moodAround 5000 Motor Neurone Disease (MND) sufferers across the UK could find relief to their muscular symptoms thanks to transdermal (through the skin) magnesium therapy, say health pioneers BetterYou.

Guidelines published by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) have outlined the need to manage symptoms, including weakness in muscles and stiffness and cramps in the limbs, so that people with the condition can maintain functional ability and enable them and their family members to live as full a life as possible.

MND is a group of incurable, progressive neurodegenerative diseases that attack the motor neurones in the brain and spinal cord. Motor neurones are the nerve cells along which the brain sends instructions to the muscles. Deterioration of these cells leads to weakness and wasting of muscles, causing increasing loss of mobility and stiffness or cramps in the limbs, and difficulties with speech, chewing, swallowing and breathing.

Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a crucial role in more than 300 different biochemical reactions each day and acts as an aid to relieve muscle tension and cramping.

Andrew Thomas, founder and Managing Director at BetterYou, said: “Magnesium is essential for the body’s ability to absorb calcium, strengthening bone and importantly allowing muscles to relax and repair. By allowing blood vessels to naturally flex it normalizes blood flow and oxygen to the brain. At a cellular level, magnesium allows the body to detox disruptive heavy metals. Basically a body replete with magnesium will be stronger, more relaxed and better able to resist stress.”

“Around 1100 people will develop MND in the UK each year and it is vital that they are aware of the symptom relief that can be received from regular supplement of this basic mineral. A few body sprays after a shower of our Magnesium Oil Original spray or a magnesium rich bath in our Magnesium Flakes could give some relief for those experiencing stiffness or cramps as part of their condition,” he added.

Supplementing magnesium transdermally is not only faster than traditional digestive means, it is also incredibly easy to do. Applied directly to the skin, magnesium will be absorbed directly into the skin tissue, providing a much easier and more effective delivery mechanism for the patient, especially when they may have issues with swallowing tablets. It can be massaged directly into the skin or added to a foot bath.

Magnesium is poorly absorbed digestively, often accompanied by a laxative effect. However, applying magnesium transdermally has been proven to be a more effective way of increasing levels than traditional tablets or capsules. A trial by Cardiff University found that applying magnesium to the skin provides a faster way of absorbing the mineral than tablets.

Without magnesium our bodies are less supple, and deficiency is linked with many health implications including migraines, anxiety, depression and extreme fatigue. Thirty five year-old Maria Dragojevic from Bristol has been using BetterYou Magnesium Oil Original spray to treat her symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

Maria says: “Suffering with CFS, I really struggled with muscle pain and joint problems.  My nutritionist advised me that many people with CFS have low magnesium levels and she recommended BetterYou Magnesium Oil Original spray. From the first use, I noticed results and have been raving about this to friends and family that suffer with achy muscles or tension. It’s so simple to use. I just spray it on after a shower, rub it in and I am good to go. I don’t have to wait for it to soak in before getting dressed. The main area I suffer with tension is my neck, shoulders and back — although I am affected all over my body these areas are by far the worst. I have noticed a vast improvement over the past few weeks.”

“Having CFS, I am tired all the time and never feel refreshed, having tight, painful muscles (particularly in the neck and shoulder area) causes me to get headaches and makes any activity difficult for me. By easing the pain using the spray, I find that I am able to do many more normal activities and I am able to go for longer periods before I am just too tired to continue,” she added.
