As Co-Founder and Chief Commercial Officer at ATUM (formerly DNA2.0), Dr. Gustafsson lead the development and customer implementation of ATUM’s machine learning and synthetic biology technology platform. The tools developed by ATUM are used by large and small companies worldwide to engineer better genes, proteins, pathways and organisms.

Before founding ATUM in 2003, Dr. Gustafsson led the bioinformatics team at Maxygen Inc. (Redwood City CA) where he developed core technologies for the company related to directed evolution, protein engineering, and bio-manufacturing.

During this time he also managed relationships with strategic accounts and oversaw much of the technical due diligence for both Maxygens internal technology portfolio as well as assessing competing and complementing technologies. Prior to Maxygen, Dr. Gustafsson held a Scientist position at Kosan Biosciences (Burlingame, CA) where he engineered Streptomyces to make novel natural products. He received his

He received his PhD from University of Umeå (Sweden) and held post-doctoral positions at UC Santa Cruz and UC San Francisco. Dr. Gustafsson holds 43 issued U.S. patents and has published ~50 scientific papers.
